Thirty-five reports of plush rocker toys tipping over and ten reports of bumps, bruises and lacerations has prompted the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in cooperation with Tek Nek Toys Int’l to recall more than 120,000 Rock ‘N Ride Plush Rocker Toys. The rocker base can become unstable allowing the rocker to tip forward or backward.

Eight models of the Rock ‘N Ride rockers are included in the recall: brown pony, pink pony, pink unicorn, deluxe pony, deluxe bull, lil’ penguin, lil’ propeller plane and Clifford big red rocker.

“The toys have molded plastic rocker bases and were sold for children at least 18 months old and up to 65 lbs. A button on the toy’s ear, hat or dash activates songs and phrases when pressed. Rockers included in this recall have a date code from July 26, 2007 through December 29, 2007. The date codes are printed on a sticker inside the battery compartment,” according to the CPSC.

The rockers were sold from September 2007 through March 2008 for about $30 at Wal-Mart, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, Target, Atwoods, and Pamida stores nationwide and Internet retailers from September 2007 through March 2008 for about $30.

Consumers should immediately take the rocker toys away from young children and contact Tek Nek Toys for a free replacement base.

For additional information, contact Tek Nek Toys toll-free at (888) 686-2728 anytime, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.teknektoys.com

It’s easy to pop in a DVD when you need to get dinner made or fold another load of clothes without “help” from your toddler. And if you’re like me, you’ve noticed it’s rare that you will find a DVD that doesn’t just require your child to sit on the couch.

Tot-a-doodle-do has created entire kits that include education DVDs and a fun hands-on activity for your kids. We got the Animal set which included the 30 minute DVD and a craft kit with everything we needed to make animal masks.

The DVD walks your child through the mask making step-by-step. It also includes other sections like Hop-n-Bop that encourage movement and hand-eye coordination. SuperSnack shows your child how to make a fun, creative snack that makes healthy eating fun.

I found the DVD to be a little dry and forced but the craft portion of the set is fantastic. They give you everything you need right down to the scissors and a bottle of glue. My two-year-old made the sheep mask while my four-year-old made the rabbit. The kit is for ages 3-7 and I would recommend it for the older end of that range. My husband and I had to pretty much do everything for my kids. They certainly enjoyed the project, but it wasn’t as hands on for them as it would’ve been for an older child.

The masks are a huge hit and we were woken up this morning to a rabbit and sheep parading around our bedroom. It’s given our daughters’ imagination a spark of creativity that has encouraged other conversations like why do sheep have wool, and what else do rabbits eat besides carrots.

The craft and DVD kits would be a perfect birthday gift and certainly offer an escape from the same old, same old things that keep piling up in toy boxes everywhere.

Clever Parents loves 3D Think & Blink Alphabet Flash Cards. Packaged in a reusable cardboard container that fastens with velcro, the pack includes 26 sturdy, brightly colored holographic cards, each one featuring a letter.

On the hologram side of the card, a window alternately displays a letter and an object (i.e. “H” and a picture of a house, “L” and a picture of a lion). By holding the card at a slightly different angle, the letter and the object appear in the foreground or background, respectively. The word describing the object is printed below the hologram.

The reverse side of the flashcard features a picture of a different object, the word as well as the letter displayed in both upper and lowercase format. During playtime, turn these flashcards into a fun game and alternately quiz each other about the letters, the objects or come up with different objects that begin with the same letter. The options are endless.

School Zone’s recommended age is 3-6, but the cards are so sturdy you can use them with younger children, too. What’s more, the low price makes this purchase a no-brainer.

The presents were opened weeks ago and now it is time to face the aftermath of the holidays. Betsy shares what to keep, what to purge, and how to keep all those toys organized…

Whether your children keep their toys in their bedroom, family room or playroom, first I want you to come to terms with the size of the room. Although we may think that the smaller the room the more clutter there will be, that is not always the case. Often times more clutter accumulates in larger rooms, simply because it can! With smaller rooms it can appear more cluttered, but often will take far less time to keep it maintained.

The first step in any organizing project is to create a plan. What is working? What is not working? How much time do you have to finish the project? Do you have a budget? etc.

The next step is to minimize the amount of contents in the room. Decisions must be made as to what to keep, give-away, and toss. I recommend having an exit strategy; decide what you are going to do with purged items before beginning the process. Children are often better at getting rid of items than we give them credit. Whether it is for a thrift store, women & children’s crisis center or a local foster child, if you find a worthwhile cause, they will probably do a great job at letting go! If you are planning a yard sale, place price stickers right on the items and then box them up. Come yard sale day; all you will have to do is open up the box and collect your money!

You will be surprised how children will play with more, if they have less. When their rooms are cluttered, it tends to overwhelm them and they will play with the same easy-to-reach toys over and over. Overwhelming a child with too much stuff will stifle their creativity.

While de-cluttering, I would recommend keeping one “memory box” for your child and allowing them to keep some things, but to keep this at a minimum. Speaking of boxes, a word of caution about storage containers: the first step in organizing a room should not be to run to your closest store and buy boxes, bins, and containers! You must minimize first, so you know what you actually need to store.

Once you have minimized the room, it is time to maximize the space. You can inexpensively take a small room to an organized space by using simple, inexpensive, storage systems. Place a shelf across the top of one wall for display items. Purchase under-the-bed storage systems, and use the top shelf of the closet to place bins. Turn a linen closet in the hallway into a toy closet. Get creative! In addition, I find it helpful to rotate toys. Have a couple bins of different toys and bring them out at different times, or rotate them in and out of different rooms.

I realize how tempting it is to de-clutter and organize your children’s spaces while they are not home, but please try and resist this temptation. Children really should be involved in the process when it pertains to their items. Make purging and organizing fun. Put on a fun CD and spend some quality time with your child as you reclaim your home from all those toys!

Have fun!

Betsy

How can we keep children from desperately wanting particular toys, only to get bored by them within hours or days of unwrapping them?

Choosing Toys that Keep Kids Interested and Engaged

If your family includes gift giving in your celebration of the holidays, you are probably familiar with the wildly enthusiastic reaction kids have when they see piles of brightly wrapped packages waiting to be opened. Those moments of hyper-charged anticipation when excited children can barely contain themselves add to the holiday magic for many families.

Yet many of those same families experience a let-down after all the gifts are unwrapped and all the must-have toys are assembled and filled with the required number of size AA batteries. The same child who asked over and over for that heavily advertised ultra-popular toy plays with it for a while, and then quickly loses interest.

Is there any antidote to this pattern? How can we keep children from desperately wanting particular toys, only to get bored by them within hours or days of unwrapping them?

Fortunately, there are ways to avoid what I call ‘toy overload’. The solution starts with changing the focus when you are selecting toys for a child. It’s not about what advertising has convinced the child he or she must have. It’s about thoughtfully selecting a product that fits the child’s developmental level and true interests. If the toy is a good fit with strong play value, it won’t end up in the play-with-it-once pile at the bottom of the toy box.

Playing for Keeps, a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting healthy play, offers several suggestions for choosing toys that can hold a child’s attention.

Focus on the play, not the toy. Rather than evaluating the features of the toy, think about the features of the play that the toy will encourage. Said another way, good play — and the likelihood that a child will maintain interest in a toy — is about what the child can do with the toy, not what the toy can do.

Find products that let kids make up the story. Look for toys that leave room for the child to use her imagination. Though it may seem to adults that electronic gadgetry in a toy or connection with a television character makes it more fun, often the opposite is true. Toys with minimal “bells and whistles” engage a child more fully because she gets to make things up—the story, the play routine, the sounds, the movement and more. What child doesn’t like that?

Give gifts that foster different types of play. When you are shopping for holiday gifts, think about assembling a group of toys that offer a “balanced diet of play” that will encourage a child to use and explore all parts of himself: his developing muscles—both the large running around ones and climbing ones and the smaller, more refined hand muscles; his brain; his growing speech and language skills; and his ability to play well with others, to be compassionate, and to solve problems.

Consider limiting television, especially around the holidays. Time for free play is a wonderful and healthy alternative to television and by avoiding its constant barrage of advertising, parents can help control the holiday “gimme’s.” Many communities have an array of fun family-oriented activities around the holidays that can also divert children from focusing on the toy of the moment—and keep them more open to more engaging play materials that fit their developmental levels.

Be sensible about how you manage toys that come into your home. If kids have too many toys, of course they won’t play with all of them. For starters, they won’t have time. So consider giving them fewer this season…and perhaps diverting some of those dollars to buying toys for disadvantaged children.

Another strategy is to put some of the holiday gifts away so kids can focus on fewer toys at a time. Pick out two or three toys to leave out, and stash the rest in storage. Based on your child’s interest level, rotate the toys so that you put one or two away and bring out one or two fresh ones every couple of weeks. It extends the play value of the toys…and you can make the holiday joy last for several months.

Tookie’s Toys is a family owned and operated toy reseller with stores in Raleigh, NC and online at www.tookiestoys.com. Owner Katherine “Tookie” Hodges has over twenty years experience matching toys and playthings with the developmental needs of children. She and her husband John get assistance testing toys from their almost three year old son, Taylor.
Simply squeeze, shake and search for a host of fun items hiding among the white beads. A ballerina, butterfly, sea horse, flower and teddy bear are just a few of the thirty or so items found in the Girl bag. (An attached fabric tag lists all of the hidden treasures included in the bag.)

What child doesn’t love a fort? A blanket spread across a couple of chairs or a bush in the backyard is transformed into a play wonderland whose only constraints are a child’s imagination. As a parent helping a child put together his or her dream world, you may at times have been frustrated by the too heavy blanket that makes the chair topple over or the wind that carries the sheet away again and again. Or perhaps
you’ve leaned towards the pre-made fort options with their tents and attaching tunnels only to find the setup too long, the space lost in a room too great, the durability of the fort too weak and the opportunity for creative play too limited. Have no fear – Fortamajig is here!

Fortamajig is an 8′ x 8′ colorful, lightweight tarp designed for children to easily create their own forts. Using the adjustable Velcro loops around its interior and exterior edges, children simply attach Fortamajig to chairs, stair rails, door knobs, curtain rods, fence posts and tree branches to create their own spaces. Put a book or a shoe in the corner pockets to stabilize the structure or open a window in the Fortamajig to create a skylight.

Clever Parents loves the Fortamajig because it’s easy to use, it’s fun, it offers limitless opportunities for open-ended creative play and when play time is over, it folds up neatly into a bag. Pretty clever, huh?

About 20,000 E300 Razor USA electric scooters have been recalled, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The welds on the handlebars of the scooters can detach, causing risk of injury. So far, 25 reports of detached handlebars resulting in a few minor injuries have been reported to Razor.

“The recall involves Model E300 Electric Scooters, which are powered by battery-operated motors. The model number appears on the tube that connects the head tube to the deck,” according to the CPSC.

“The recalled scooters are blue or silver. This recall includes only products with barcodes beginning in 100620-03 through -09. Products with other barcodes or no barcode are not included in this recall. The barcode can be located on the steering stem, the battery tray, the charger, and the product’s packaging.”

The scooters were sold from January 2006 through October 2006 at Pep Boys stores nationwide and various Internet retail sites for between $190 and $230. “Consumers should stop using the product immediately and contact Razor USA to obtain a free repair kit.”

For additional information, contact Razor USA toll-free at (866) 623-3297 anytime, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.razor.com/recall

Lately, we have been inundated with news headlines about toys being recalled: the lead paint on Dora dolls from China; the tiny yet powerful magnets in Magnetix that end up in kids’ tummies and cause internal injuries and death; and hundreds of other toys for young children. There is plenty of blame to go around, and we consumers need to ask ourselves why so many of the things we buy are manufactured in ways that put our children at risk. It is great that we can buy so many fun things for $2-$3. But there are at least two downsides to continuing to demand ever cheaper products:

1) The cheapest forms of manufacturing will always be the ones that prize efficiency over safety

2) If we reduce all of our playthings to the inexpensive trinket level, are we training kids to be “disposable” consumers?

The Blue Lake take on it:

Unfortunately, it is that scary. Watch this video about Magnetix danger and death that was produced for The Chicago Tribune. If you haven’t already done so, check out the somewhat overwhelming U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s summary of recalled toys and Mattel’s list of Fisher Price Recalled Lead Painted Toys (with very helpful photos) . We are just starting to think about manufacturing our magazines overseas – and these events make us realize how lucky we are that our local printer is a family-owned business that enthusiastically sources soy-based inks, water-based coatings and FSC-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) paper to meet our standards for The Tessy & Tab Reading Club. If and when we add new printers to our roster, we need to have the best references and reliable QA checkpoints. We understand that parents want the best deal for their purchases, and the $48 for 24 issues is not cheap. On the other hand, we don’t want to cut costs to get down to $35 if it means that the natural behavior of a 2-year-old (“Now I think I will put my magazine in my mouth!) becomes a threat to their health.

Why: Every week my son and I sit down together to watch Top Chef. He digs it when the chefs “super chop” and doesn’t understand why it takes me three times as long to chop an onion. So it was only a matter of time before we added some kitchen toys and play food to his growing collection of trucks, trains and planes.

Thanks to oompa.com, we found a gorgeous wooden food set from HABA ($14.95) that comes in a little basket. Yes, it’s pricier than some of the other play food on the market, but they’re ten times more appealing (and durable) than that flimsy plastic stuff you won’t miss if it suddenly disappears.

They also have a Cooking Utensils Set ($14.99) and the most adorable apron ($25), so your tiny chef can prepare your “meal” in style. And if your kid needs a kitchen, they’ve got those, too. (I’ll have to put one on our wish list for the holidays.) You never know, he might end up as a Top Chef someday.

Find it: oompa.com

Tip: Worried about all the toy recalls hitting the news? Watch a video of CEO Milanee Cleere discussing the safety of toys sold by Oompa.
