Recently I stumbled across a website called handmedowns.com that will change how moms buy and sell their gently used baby/kid gear.

Visualize with me. My 2.5-year old daughter’s room is full of toys she’s no longer interested in and clothes she can’t really fit into anymore. Her overflow of belongings has taken over our garage, living room, my bedroom, and even backyard (whose idea was it to buy that slide?).

How one 25 lb child can have more in terms of belongings than I do blows me away.

That’s where handmedowns.com comes in.

I’ve tried eBay before. Not only does the whole bidding system irritate me, I’m not really into the post office scene. Craigslist is better but the popular website hosts plenty-a-weirdo and I always wonder who is really coming to pick up my used high chair.

Five years ago, two moms, Amy and Michelle, were chatting over dinner and laughing about balancing family, friends and work while keeping their sanity intact. Michelle’s designer diaper bag had milk stains all over it and receipts and diapers were falling out all over the restaurant floor.

Wanting something that looked good and matched her personality, Michelle had purchased the bag only weeks before when her attempts to find a stylish bag that also functioned well came to a halt. “I was not willing to give up my identity and style just because I had a baby,” says Michelle.

The conversation eventually moved to baby bags and how the contents of their diaper bags were a reflection of their lives: keys, diapers, day-planner, crumpled receipts, cell phones, cracker crumbs. Their diaper bags were not only a collection of baby items, but of items typically stored in their purses.

In an effort to streamline, the women found that their diaper bags had replaced their purses and briefcases as a catch-all for everything that needed carrying.

The baby bag discussion turned towards products. Amy, a product marketer, and Michelle, a working mom, lamented that diaper bags typically fell into two categories: functional or stylish (and ne’er the twain shall meet). So, a few cocktail napkin sketches later and the design for the first Amy Michelle bag was underway: stylish, functional, and made for both baby and mom.

“The bag had to transfer from work to school to play dates to a night out because today’s mom does not have time to change her bag each time she changes where she is going, ” says Michelle. “We actually went to a purse-manufacturing factory to have our bags sewn so that they resemble purses more than diaper bags.”

Fast forward to today and the Amy Michelle product line-up consists of eight different styles (grouped into Classic Baby Bags, Chic Baby Bags and Street Baby Totes) each of which contain a section for baby and – hooray – a section for mom.

The baby section of each bag contains a washable changing pad, internal and external bottle pockets, compartments for diapers and wipes, a stroller attachment and a quick release pacifier holder. The mom section has credit card/ID slots, a large compartment for typical purse contents and an easy to find key ring.

The best part about these bags is that they combine function with style without giving up their utility as a diaper bag. Baby or not, many of the bags (and definitely Clever Parents favorite Sweet Pea in red patent pictured above) easily doubles as a chic weekender. Now that’s clever.

The arrival of a newborn, especially if it’s the first born, brings a flurry of child proofing. The problem is that the initial bout of safety consciousness can give way as your child or children grow up. And that of course is a problem since safety hazards tend to increase with a child’s age. The other issue is that nobody likes a lecture that is nothing more than a list of “no, don’t, you can’t, and never.” Stressing the importance of safety is like talking about saving for retirement. It’s necessary, but not very much fun. Not nearly as much fun as skateboarding down a flight of stairs without a helmet or spending money today.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Ellaroo, today announced a voluntary recall of 1,200 Ellaroo Ring Sling Baby Carrriers. “The aluminum rings on the sling carriers can bend or break,” according to the CPSC. “This can cause the fabric to slip through the rings and infants to fall out of the carrier.”

Four instances of the rings bending and two instances of rings breaking have been reported. The carriers involved in the recall are those slings item numbers 2101 and 2102 printed on the outside of the product box. “The Ellaroo Ring Sling has a fabric carrier with two aluminum rings that is worn by the user to carry an infant up to 35 pounds. The carriers are sold in mahogany, mango stone, brasilia and malay color prints. Only sling carriers with lot numbers 03/07 and 07/04 printed on a label, under the size label, inside the Ring Sling are included in the recall.”

The Ellaroo Sling Carriers were sold for about $100 at juvenile product and department stores nationwide and online, including BabiesRUs.com, between June 2007 and February 2008.

Consumers should immediately stop using the sling carriers and contact Ellaroo for instructions on returning the carriers for a repair or replacement Ring Sling.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Fast Forward LLC, today announced a voluntary recall of 6,600 Spiderman® Water Bottles. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. “Screws under the bottle’s lid can come loose and fall into the cup, posing a choking hazard to children.”

To date, Fast Forward has received three reports of screws coming loose under the water bottle’s lid; no injuries have been reported.

“The recalled plastic water bottles have a Spiderman® picture on the cup and a Spiderman® figure on the screw-on lid. The water bottle is red, white, blue, and black and measures nine inches high.”

The $10 water bottles were sold exclusively at Sears stores nationwide from July 2007 through August 2007.

Consumers should immediately take the recalled water bottles away from children and contact Fast Forward LLC for instructions on returning the water bottles for a full refund.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Trek Bicycle Corp, today announced a voluntary recall of nearly 50,000 Trek MT220 Girls Bicycles.

The frame of the bicycle can break during use, resulting in the rider losing control and suffering injuries. To date, 13 incidents of frames breaking have been reported including four minor injuries.

“This recall involves Trek girls’ bicycles model MT220 and model years 2005 (light metallic blue), 2006 (metallic silver and metallic purple or pink and pearl white), and 2007 (pink and white pearl or metallic purple). The model name is printed on the frame of the bicycle. Model year 2008 bicycles re not included in this recall.”

The bicycles were sold at authorized Trek dealers nationwide from April 2004 through June 2007 for about $300.
