When I began my business, Cash in Clutter, it was actually an online consignment business. I quickly realized what a paralyzing fear it can be for some to let go of items when they think there might be monetary worth involved. I also realized that the true cost of clutter goes way beyond a monetary value. In addition, I learned that there is a vast difference sometimes between implied value and market value, and what you think you should receive for your item is not always even close to what you will receive.
Americans have a huge problem with clutter. In 30 years our families have gotten smaller yet our homes have swelled in size. Our attics, basements, and garages are so full of clutter that we are paying people to store our stuff (storage facilities). What does this mean in regards to your treasure’s value? Your items, regardless of their book value, are only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. It is a simple case of supply and demand.
Do you know how to find your item’s market value? A simple way is to go on eBay and do history searches on how well similar items have sold at auction. This is a free service. If you don’t know how to use eBay, I’m quite sure that you know somebody who does. In addition, you can contact consignment stores and ask if they have an opinion on how much you can receive for your item.
Start slowly, every week start letting things go. Place an item on sale on eBay, put an ad in the newspaper, or my personal favorite option – donate. Don’t underestimate the satisfaction of donating your old clutter. Learn your facts and start today. If you don’t understand eBay, find someone who does. You can offer to pay a friend, a family member, or check into the many eBay consigners. With reportedly more than 125 million registered eBay users worldwide, you are bound to find someone eager to help you out. Offer to pay them a certain percentage (example: 20%) after all fees and expenses.
In my opinion, invest in your family and friends and not in your attic. The true cost of clutter is often the feeling of being overwhelmed by your things. Not being able to live for the future or enjoy the day. To wake up each morning feeling as if your life’s ownership is being held by your belongings. Not being able to invite friends or family to your home because clutter has taken over is simply not worth any amount of money.
You want to have items in your home that you love. Belongings that inspire and make you eager for the future, and things that reflect you and your personality, should be displayed in your homes. Be very selective as to what items you are storing and why. Could there be regrets someday? Sure, you do take that chance that you may let something go today and down the road it could make someone else a fortune. But, what are you gaining by letting it go? There is a priceless feeling that happens to people when they gain control back over their belongings. Let it go… and gain your life back!
