Throughout the month of May I have challenged you to get rid of pounds… of clutter. I offered tips on cleaning out the kitchen, your closets, and even your attic. Isn’t it amazing how much lighter you feel when you let go of things?
So, what should you do next; or what should you do if you have done nothing at all? Set the timer and start somewhere…anywhere. Start a small project first and get used to the process. Find accomplishments in the smallest tasks. I am going to give you a short list of a few clutter hiding places and challenge you to tackle one today. Once you get one done, go onto the next. Just keep the mindset that once one area is de-cluttered you will never allow it to get bad again. You really don’t need to spend much time on this. Simply set your timer for 15-20 minutes, put on a favorite CD, and stay FOCUSED. You will surprise yourself how quick these jobs can take.
Where’s your clutter hiding?:
- Cleaning detergents
- Pots and pans
- Condiments
- Magazines
- Medicine cabinet
- Car
- Purse
- Diaper Bag
- Bookcase
- Make-up
- Linens
Keep: What you need and what you plan on using – items that you would actually purchase today
Toss: items that are expired, broken and beyond repair, or no longer useful to anyone
Give away/sell: items that are in good condition and useful, just not useful to you anymore
If even the simplest of tasks seem overwhelming, contact a friend or a professional organizer to help out. You should not be held prisoner by the things in your home. I understand the emotional attachment of things… but I also know the sweet release of letting go. It is very empowering to no longer allow things to own you. It’s time to take ownership back!!
