Through some not-so-subtle reminders, I’ve been informed that Mother’s Day is coming up. (Thanks, Kris.) Sunday the 13th to be exact is the day that we pay homage to mothers by doling out cash to the greeting card, floral, jewelry and restaurant industries.
It wasn’t always so commericial though, according to Wikipedia entry for Mother’s Day, the original concept as envisioned by Julia Ward Howe was a Mother’s Day for Peace. Howe based her idea on the work of Ann Jarvis who organized a Mother’s Day celebration to speed reconcilation after the Civil War. President Wilson signed the order making Mother’s Day a holiday in 1914.
While Mother’s Day might be more closely linked with the greeting card industry today, it is here to stay and certainly worth celebrating. In fact, according to the National Restaurant Industry, Mother’s Day is the most popular day to dine out at a restaurant.
To give you some ideas for celebrating Mom, Kris and I sat down separately and came up with a list of Mother’s Day gift ideas. Can you say disconnect?
David: A card
Kris: Clothes from her favorite boutique
David: A card with chocolates
Kris: Oversized handbags from Coach.com (Kris loves the Legacy Leather Satchel for $698.00)
David: A card with flowers
Kris: Check out Luxurylink.com and surprise Mom with a trip somewhere
David: Homemade artwork from the kids and a card
Kris: Ring or Pendant-Kris likes David Yurman
David: Picture of the kids and a card
Kris: The piece of furniture Mom’s had her eye on. (In the case of Kris it is a buffet for the dining room)

OK, now I don’t think my ideas are all that terrible. Once I became a mother (and definitely by the time I became pregnant w/ #3), Mother’s Day started to rank up there with birthdays and Christmas in terms of holiday importance. :-) Kris

Other than the clothes, those gifts are probably a little more than the average Dad or kids want to spend. Will a trip for David be on your list for Father’s Day?
Clare’s Mom loves Coach bags too. We’ve gotten her a couple of those before, but have something else planned for this year.

Yep… they’re more than this family will be spending… but a girl can dream. ;-)
I would LOVE to give David a trip for Father’s Day…. absolutely!
