Happy New Year! We had a great 2006 and would like to thank all you—viewers, contributors and those we’ve featured—for making Clever Parents what it is today. We’re looking forward to 2007 and are excited about making Clever Parents even better.
Speaking of getting better, it’s New Year’s Day and that means New Year’s Resolutions. Today is the day when Americans sit back and take a long look in the mirror and then resolve to improve. We must not be very good at improving since according to First Gov, the Federal Government’s portal, Americans have pretty much the same top goals year after year. The full list reads like the self-help section at the local bookstore.
- Lose Weight
- Pay Off Debt
- Save Money
- Get a Better Job
- Get Fit
- Eat Right
- Get a Better Education
- Drink Less Alcohol
- Quit Smoking Now
- Reduce Stress Overall
- Reduce Stress at Work
- Take a Trip
- Volunteer to Help Others
Fear not, Clever Parent. Over the next month, we’re going to take some of the more popular resolutions and look for ways that Clever Parents can improve their chances for resolution success. Here a few ideas to get you started:
Combine resolutions: Want to help a charity and lose some pounds? Sign up with Team in Training. You’ll get in shape for a race-either a triathlon, half marathon, or bike race while racing money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.
Shop now to save: Check out Smart Spending columnist Faye Prosser’s new column on saving money by shopping in January.
Think 509 for college: It’s never to early to start planning for your child’s college tuition. And, unfortunately, hoping your son or daughter will be a three point shooting phenom isn’t a sound plan. Look into starting a 509 Savings plan today.
Apply virtual pressure: It’s a fact that you are more likely to achieve goals that you’ve stated to someone else. Especially if that someone is close to you—the guy next to you at Starbucks doesn’t count. Want to get in shape, but don’t have a workout partner? Login to Traineo.com and you can enter your fitness goals and assign four ‘personal motivators’ who will receive automatic email updates on your progress to your fitness goals. Now that’s pressure.
Here’s hoping that 2007 is a great one for you and your family.
